"A few" is used to indicate a small number in a positive way, "few" is used to indicate a small number in a negative way, and "many" is used to indicate a large number.
For example:
"I have read a few books" - I have read a small number of books, but I think it's quite a lot.
"I have read few books" - I have hardly read any books at all.
"I have read many books" - I never stop reading.
