Does he say 'The thesis defence begin now'? Or 'Let's begin the thesis defence'?

What do you mean by defnding a thesis- could you describe the context a bit more please?

The situation is:

The students are ready to defend their theis. Before they start the person who is responsible for the defense ( should I call him chairman?) announces the beginning of the defense in a formal and academic way before each student defend his/her thesis. What should the chairman say?

I think this should be the second sentence. There should be another sentence before the chairman calls on somebody to explain and justify his/her thesis.

I think this is due to the cultural differences between China and English speaking countries. Here on formal occasions the leaders or chairman would always say something to indicate the beginning of some activity before the activity starts. In your country people are straight forward and to the point, I think.
