Default "pray tell" or "pray send"

Hi,

I've come across "pray tell" and "pray send" a few times recently. Is "pray" just another way to say "please" in these phrases?

And it would be in the imperative form, right?

Thanks!

S.

Pray tell is another way of saying please do,

pray tell, please do tell about something
pray send, please do send something

The subject is implied (you), which makes "pray tell" imperative.

All the best.

Isn't it a little old-fashioned or specific rather for BrE?

Thank you, Ewelina

Yes, it is an archaic expression, even in British English. It is one of those expressions that are reserved for ironic effect.

For example:

Bloke in Pub: "I've just forwarded a chain letter to all my friends, and now I've made a million pounds."

You: "Oh pray tell, do..."

Yes; humorously archaic, or sometimes simply arch.
