I was trying to find the meaning of expression "self-conscious formality"?

"self-conscious formality" means to feel uncomfortable yet needing to behave civilly such as in a social or public gathering.

It was with self-conscious formality when Nancy and Ted were introduced to each other by Ted's unsuspecting wife.
