Hi. Ouisch, from your post it follows that this phrase has a bit negative meaning in the sense that "you don't want to like him, but it is impossible because he's so...", and here something nice follows. Could it has, however, positive meaning in which "he's so... that one must like him", so he's just as great as only could be?

Yes, it can be used in a positive sense, too. Someone could be so nice and pleasant, or so helpful, that you can't help but like him.
