    Question 'is' or 'was'

Could someone tell me which of these is correct.

Central Park, which is the first landscaped park in the United States, is very big.

Central Park, which was the first landscaped park in the United States, is very big.

I believe the second is correct, and that the first implies that up until this present day, no other park has been landscaped in America yet.

But the second means it was the first in the past (at the time it was landscaped) but others have been done since then.

However, my co-worker is adament the first sentence is correct.

Any ideas / clarification would be appreciated.

Riceball, I agree with you. If you say 'it is the first', then you are talking about something new and, though the facts haven't changed, the times have.
