usage of the word significant
If I need to say " the change in social mores signified a larger change in gender equations", would it be ok to say " the change in social mores were significant (or signific) of a larger change in gender equations ?

Not really- to me, 'significant' has the idea of a large quantity or number, which changes the meaning a bit.
