Hi. Does "the other day" refer to a particular day that the person I am speaking to should know which day I have on my mind?

No. "The other day" is meant to be vague. If the person you're talking to wants clarification, he'll ask:
"That printer can't be out of ink already! I just put a new cartridge in the other day."
"Really? When was this?"
"Umm...Well, OK, now that I think about it, it was a month ago."
Then, "the other day" means exactly the same as "some other day" (in past), doesn't it?

Not to me- it means an unspecified but recent day, while 'some other day' would be a second unspecified day:
I tried to do it, gave up and decided I'd try again some toher day. (here, it's a second time reference and head of the time of the inititial acction)
