Which is correct:
1-His family were robbed of their inheritance.
2-His family was robbed of their inheritance.

[1] They each were robbed.
[2] The group as a whole was robbed.

I think I made a mistake though. I think the second one should be:
2-His family was robbed of ITS inheritance.

If 'family' is singular then the pronoun corresponding to it would be 'it', wouldn't it?
