Default play truant

If it is a student, we can say he plays truant. If it is a worker, how should we say if he doesn't come to the office and has not asked for a leave?

Thanks a lot!

Emily Wong

Sometimes the slang term "I played hookey from work today" is used. (Playing hookey is also used to describe a truant student.)
