When 'compare' is used as an intransitive verb (without a direct object), we use an ablative phrase ('with' plus a noun phrase). For example:
"Your writing compares well with his."
When 'compare' is used as a transitive verb (taking a direct object), we use a dative phrase ('to' plus a noun phrase). For example:
"I am comparing your writing to his."
