Default word for "word reminder"

would someone please tell me the word for a word or phrase used to remind oneself of another word, i.e., might remember "six gallon" to remember "hat". another way of saying it: the name used as a "trick" to remember another word. hope this made sense
thanks.

I am quite sure that the word you are trying to think if is mnemonic. One example of a mnemonic is one used to help people remember the names of the Great Lakes, HOMES: Huron, Ontario, Michigan, Erie, Superior.
