What are the word classes of the following 'out's? Their plan didn't work out so he dropped out of the arrangement.

work out- here it is modifying the verb, so it's not functioning as a preposition. Some call this a particle, or adverbial particle, while others prefer to call it an adverb.

Same thing to me- the verb is drop + out, to make the phrasal verb, with of doing the connecting as a preposition
