    Default in or from

    I has been taught before that the preposition of
    the following #1.sentence is wrong and the #2. is correct,
    but a (Japanese) friend of mine recently told me that the #1 is also okay.
    I'm a little bit confused which sentence is correct.
    #1.The sun rises from the east.
    #2.The sun rises in the east.

    'from' could work, yes, but it's incorrect.

    [1] from, starting point: from ... to
    [2] from, source: comes from

    [3] in, within the limits, bounds, or area of: was hit in the face; born in the spring; a chair in the garden.
