how many words are in the english language that would deem to be swear words , bad words or inapropriate words?
How many words are there in the English language that might be considered swear words, "bad" words, or simply inappropriate?
Hmm.
I can think of 47.
(I'm not counting the "inappropriate" ones, as every word might be inappropriate, in the right context. Or even the wrong context.)

47?! George Carlin only came up with seven! I'm going to start hanging out with Mr. P. and his cool friends!![]()
Being British, I got over the fifty barrier, but then we are proud of our swearing.![]()
Now my curiosity is piqued. Perhaps I don't read enough gents room wall graffiti, but I cannot come up with that many swear words. (Of course, I'm a lady, and the gents room thing was strictly by accident...)
Anyway, are you also counting things like nicknames for body parts as swear words? (For example, there are several dozen slang terms for a woman's breasts, but only one of them is verboten by the FCC.) Or strictly words that cannot be said on television? What are your criteria? (And yes, even counting mild epithets like H-E-double hockey sticks I'm still having trouble coming up with 47 or 50....)

(Now you know why this forum is blue, Ouisch.)

Ouisch, in the UK, Viz have published the 3rd edition of the Roger's Profanisaurus, the 'king of swearing dictionaries', which now boasts a mind-boggling 8,000 rude words and phrases. I have to confess, or boast, that one of the entires was a vulgar term that I made up and submitted.![]()
I'm adding this tome to my bookstore shopping list! And congrats, tdol, for such creativity and recognition! (Mum must be proud...Originally Posted by tdol
