Red face when to use affect vs effect?

should the following sentence read affected or effected? how do you know which to use?

In the US (2004) asthma affected 20 million people and cost $16.1 billion from direct and indirect costs

Affect is a verb, which is why it is correct in your example. Effect is a noun: "The primary effect of asthma is shortness of breath."
