"Gimme five" started out as a cool or hip version of a traditional handshake. One person would extend his hand out, palm up, and tell the other, "give me five!" The other person would then slap the outstretched palm with his own in a brisk, downward motion.
This evolved into the "high five" - person A holds his hand high over his head, palm facing forward. Person B steps up and slaps A's palm. (Opposite hands are used, just like one would do when shaking hands.) |
