what is the grammatical error in the following sentence?

Locked away in an old bag. I was surprise to found my passport.

I was surprised to find my passport which was locked in an old bag.

Hope that's a better sentence.

It's called a dangling modifier. I wrote an article a few weeks ago about exactly this kind of error: Dangling, he wrote a modifier.

but should "Away" be omitted?

"locked away" sounds better, but "locked" on its own is OK.
