I guess everyone is doing the same assignment, I also need help with this. My main topic would be controversial television advertising.

All they're really asking you to do is to narrow down your topic before writing about it. For example, controversial television advertising is a very broad topic. If you were to plot it out on a "wheel", that phrase would be in the middle. Then on each spoke you could list one idea that pertains to the topic. Feminine hygiene ads, for example, could be one; ads that have sexual or erotic overtones another. Perhaps commercials that perpetuate negative stereotypes could be another. Once you have a few different ideas jotted down, you're ready to research and write your paper.

Don't forget to explore why a commercial might be considered controversial, and what the effect of it is - does it turn people off of the product, or do sales increase due to the buzz created by the controversy?
