I always come across these phrases but I couldn't seem to get their context meanings. Hope you could answer me. Thanks!

"For the life of me" is used when you are complete dumbfounded or unable to comprehend/believe a situation:

"For the life of me, I don't know why she married that jerk!"
"I can't for the life of me figure out why they closed the only bookstore in town."


"If anything" means perhaps or on the contrary:

"I don't think he's stupid; if anything, he just thinks differently than the rest of us."
"Sam and Diane aren't dating each other - if anything, they're just good friends."
