Did you finish yet ?

Hello

I am a bit confused, it seems that the question "Did you finish yet" is considered as correct by some (I've just found it considered as such in an on-line exercise on another ESL site).

Could you please explain me whether this "did + yet" is grammatically correct or not and why.

In British English it is more normal to use the present perfect: "Have you finished yet?" This is because the question links the past with the present, and that's when we use the present perfect.

In American English the past simple -- "Did you finish yet?" -- is quite common, at least in informal speech. I think the logic is that because "yet" makes the connection between past and present, you don't need a special tense as well.
