Question Go down a dead end

Hi. What does "to go down a dead end" mean? I suppose it means to find yourself in a situation that leads nowhere, so you need to change (if it is possible) your action(s) that has(have) led you there--am I right?

Thanks,
Nyggus

PS. Is it an idiom?
