Can you substitue been with gone in past perfect continuous ?

You can say, for example,
She had been swimming for 2 hours before we went to lunch.
But if you change gone for been, the meaning will change, because you no longer talk about her going to swim.
If you use 'been', then you would be giving the idea that she did return.
