1. Maude is a teacher. She works at a school. 2. Maude is a teacher. She works at school. If I did a test which should I choose? I know if she were a cook we’d certainly use the indefinite article. What about teachers?

Hi tdol, If there is no name specified for the school, then wouldn't it need an "a"? Somehow it sounds strange to say something like this: Rob is a teller. He works at bank. or Rob, the teller works at bank. [I typed the name (Rob) without thinking. Then I realized I should have used another name, but I will leave it here for now. ;) I wonder if this can be called a Freudian slip?] What is the difference between 'bank' and 'school'? Husband asking about son John: Where is John? Wife: He's at school. A: Where is Rob? B: He's at the bank. or He's at work. Thanks

HI , The first sentence sounds that she works at a cetain school while the second sentence shows that the preposition at is unecessary here with the verb work, it should be " she's in school means - she's at school. At school means that she works there. ANY COMMENTS would be welcomed . WITH LUCK. Saleemabu

I'd like to offer some advice if I may Humble, if you going to specifiy details, i.e. the location, then you would write: Maude is a teacher. She works at a school (in Rothermond Street/New Hampshire etc etc) You see, by using 'a', the marker will assume there is additional information to follow, which I'm assuming there's not in this instance So in your case: Maude is a teacher. She works at school. Works fine http://www.studentproofreader.com
