Default meaning of "banks"

Dear teachers.

why the "bank"= river .
some time I see "bank" with "s" on the end = "banks"

eg. My wife and I are walking along the banks of the river.

what is the meaning of "banks"

thankyou very much!

I'm a beginner join to forums, more thing to study. hard to explain to use english, (use dictionary yet) if something wrong , please correct me !!! thanks

The "bank" of a river is the sloping ground beside the river; you often find a path there.
