English class - I think an article should be there as it is a countable noun.

The idea of an English class should not be only about writing and reading, but also about broadening our [ English] language understanding, its depth and usage, thus,giving us a greater comprehension or approach of the way we communicate [with the others]

I'd say 'understanding of the language' and I'd delete 'or approach'
