if no, how do i fix it? or suggestion to make it better

The idea of English class should not be just about writings and readings, but about broadening our understanding of the language, its depth and usage, and giving us a greater understanding of the way we communicate.

English class - I think an article should be there as it is a countable noun.

The idea of an English class should not be only about writing and reading, but also about broadening our [ English] language understanding, its depth and usage, thus, giving us a greater comprehension or approach of the way we communicate [with the others]

I'd say 'understanding of the language' and I'd delete 'or approach'
