    I felt a misty consciousness as of something forgotten--a thrill of returning thought: and somehow the mystery of language was revealed to me.
    What does "as of" mean? Is it better to understand each of the word separately?

    "Is it better to understand each of the word separately," Yes.
    However, 'as of' as a preposition exists, and means from a time on, or at the time.

    as of here means I felt the same way as something that has been forgotten.
