Ask for suggestion

I have difficulty in learning English & American Literature as there is too much memory work and the works are sometimes so abstract that they're beyond my understanding. I want to get some suggestions on learning this subject. Should I read as many works as possible ? Appreciate your help!!

Which books have you enjoyed so far? I would think of those, then find others similar that might also be enjoyable as the first stage.
