Default difference in meaning?

It`s a pity you hadn`t asked him how to get there [can "it`s a pity" be used in this sentence?]

I wish you had asked him how to get there.

Which of the previous sentences is correct and why? Are they both correct?

Thank you.

I'd use the simple past in the first.
