Default in spite of doing sth / in spite of one's doing sth

Hi all!
Look at these two senetences...
'In spite of studying hard he failed to pass the exam'
'In spite of his studying hard he failed to pass the exam'
and please tell me whether there is any diffrence in meaning between them and whether the second one is gramatically correct?
Big thanks in advance! :)

In spite of something.
Both your sentences are correct.
To me they are equal in meaning.
