Default looking for a word!

my friend told me that i was a person who didn't like to ask help from anybody else, just doing it by my own. He said I was so apish. I didn't know the meaning and I asked why he said that to me. Then he told me the meaning(Above mensioned). But I reffered to the dictionary and i found different meaning but the one my friend taught me. Does anyone of you know what is the real word for a person who doesn't like to ask help or simliar meaning. Or the word Apish is a slang for that description.? thanks
