There is an old German fairy-tale about a poor young man who gives his heart to an evil spirit in return for a heart of stone; the spirit promises him that with his new heart, he will become rich and so win the affection of the girl he loves.

With his new hard heart, he becomes ruthless and unemotional. He does become rich, and he does marry his sweetheart, but he shows no affection for his wife and treats everyone harshly -- even on his wedding night he stays up counting his money instead of... well, instead of doing what young men usually do when they're just married.
