phrasal verbs and the corresponging single words

when i study the phrasal verbs, what I see is that almost there is one word which has the same meaning as the phrasal verb .for example :put off =postpone. what Iwant to know is the natural speaking of an English man in a vilLage who is not influnced by the outside world or not educated(if there is such posibility!)). will he use put off or postpone? and are those singl corresponging words which are not used frequently from the past english , remaining after it has developed?

"Put off" is far less formal than "postpone," so I imagine that is what the isolated village man would use.
