scholarship essay question

I am writing a scholarship essay. I want to know when writing the essay if we mention someone, like such as a friend, can we use their first name when referring to them throughout the essay?

When you say a scholarship essay, what ecactlydo you mean? If it is a narrative or descriptive piece of writing, then I would say it's OK.
