| Re: Transitive or Intransitive Thanks Fieldmouse. But this is what I read on the TES site: Does "The King was loved by many" use a transitive verb? Yes "was loved" is using a transitive verb. (You could omit the "by many" - the answer would be the same.) Verbs may be used transitively either in the Subject Verb Object (Adjunct) construction ("Many loved the king") OR in Subject Verb (Adjunct) where the verb form is "to be" plus past participle - i.e. Passive. "Love" is an intransitive verb in S V (A) constructions where the verb is in Active form: "The King loved too well." |
