My mother is serious and has been admitted in hospital.

I would say : My mother`s condition is serious and she ....

I`d like to see some experts` advice, as well.

I think it should be "My mother is serious and has been admitted to hospital."

"My mother is serious" means that she is a serious person.

If she is ill, and her condition got her into hospital, you have to refer to her health / condition:

My mother's condition is serious...
or
My mother is seriously ill...
