Default correct my mistake@@

1.Did you hear that Ben was fired last month? He had been forking for that import company for more than ten years and he had worked in almost every department. Nobody knew the company like he did.

2.i found an exchange program in England that sounded like the perfect answer. I stayed with a host family for one month. It was a huge disappointment! I sat there the whole time staring at the host mother and father hoping that there would be some breakthrough. Nothing.

in the sentences, 1.why can't i use "had been working" or "was working" instead of use "had worked

2.had been sitting or were sitting instead of "sat"

1 Because he only worked in one department at a time- the progressive makes it sound as if he did the jobs simultaneously.
2 'Was siiting' is OK. 'Were' doesn't agree with the subject and the past perfect suggests it happened before the rest, which it didn't.
