how to say 'angle'
A student who grew up in California asked us why we say 'angle' as in 'at'. She said that they say it with the 'a' sound in 'angel'. What is the correct pronunciation of such words? She said it's the same with 'anger' or 'angry'.

The important part of your question is "they say it", meaning that it is the normal pronunciation where she lives. The way you say it is how I do - but I am sure there are people from other parts of the UK who pronounce it differently. It is just a matter of regional/national accents.
Another example. As I was born in Wales I say the word "bad" with a very long "a" and it sounds to many people as if I insert the letter "r" before the "d". I have had problems with this in the different parts of England that I have lived during my life, where the pronunciation was with a very short "a" sound.
