Default we'd better go now = we should better?

I've checked that the meaning in the contraction of the phrase "we'd better go now" is "we had better go now", but I cannot believe it, it sounds so strange, I'd rather believe the meaning is "we should better go now", can this be possible?.
Is it correct to say "I should better do something"?
I get confused because "had better" sounds like past, and after this should come a verb in past participle, like: I had better gone there.
Please help me.
Thanks

"had better" is a 2 word modal verb and, like "ought to" does not have different tenses. You'd - and I'd/He'd/She'd, etc - can be a contraction for you would or you had, in the same way as she's can be a contraction for she is or she has.

"should better" is not good because it is really mixing up two different modal verbs (had better and should) which more or less mean the same thing.
