Why is this sentence wrong, "I often go to the church" whereas this sentence correct "I don't often go to the theatre." Why is usage of "the" different in the two cases?

It just is!
There is often no logic or reason when we decide whether or not to use 'the'.
For example, various diseases:
We have a cold; we have malaria; we have the flu.
