Default While we waited vs. While we were waiting

Hi teachers,

I met Tom at the airport a few weeks ago. We had a chat while we waited/while we were waiting for our flight.

Which one is correct?

Thanks in advance

Hi Janaina Volker,

Thanks for your response.

Clould you tell me the reason why the first option sounds better?

Thanks

it´s shorter ...more general..while we were waiting for our flight, the most extraordinary thing happened! A baby elephant walked past!
