Hi teachers,
Mary went/has been to Australia for a while but she's back again now.
Which one is correct?
Jupiter
went is correct.
went
Hi Humble and Janaina,
Thanks for your answer.
But I have doubt that why the present perfect (Mary has been) is not correct here?
Mary has been to Australia means she has been there and now she is at her home country, not Australia.
We use Present Perfect because it's related to the Present.
Mary has been (present perfect) and she's back now (present)
Could you explain me more about it?
Jupiter
Both are correct. The important word in the example is now. This links the past with the present and means present perfect tense is good. The use of the past simple tense is also good because you are describing two finished past actions - went and came back.Originally Posted by Jupiter
