Default to date we had?

Dear Teachers,

From Mirror, Mirror by Gregory Maquire:

"We lived without the caw and twitch of sex, or to date we had."

Should the sentence structured like "we lived to date we had"? What does "to date we had" mean?

In that sentence the writer (I'm guessing, having not read the book) is saying that they had not submitted to their sexual impulses throughout a certain amount of time, and then we he (or she) adds, "or to date we had", what he is saying is that up until now they haven't engaged in sexual activity, and what is implied is that NOW something is probably going to happen.

Thanks! I thought "to date" was used as a verb and didn't realize it meant up until now.
