it is in my sons exam and i cannot help him because i dont know what it means.

Conjunctions are words that link phrases and clauses. One of the most common conjunctions in English and other languages [as well ] is "and".

There are coordinating conjunctions and, or, but, nor, for, so, yet that connect words, phrases or clauses that are of equal importance.
There are correlative conjunctions but...and, either...or, neither...nor, not only...but also and others that also connect things of equal importance, but are always used in pairs.
There are subordinating conjunctions since, because, although, if, after, while, when, before, unless and others that connect the main clause with an adverbial (subordinate) clause.
