Hi, What does "relate to" in the following Q&A mean?

Q: You mentioned you were a fan of Sex and the City! Which character do you relate to most?
A: All but Carrie and Samantha especially.

I thought "relate to" meant "resemble" or something like that in this kind of questions, but as a person who answered the question was a man, I guess it's a bit strange that a guy says he resembles Carrie and Samantha.
Can you help me?
