ASK and ASK FOR

Why does one say "She asked my name" but "She asked for a bottle of beer"?
I think I can manage using them but don´t really know why it must be one or the other...

a person can ask every thing. a question, an address, the place of s.th, or anything else.
but ask for means BEG. you ask for money, means that you ask soebody give you something severely. you beg for it. you really want that thing.
but asking for something as a slang means inviting troubles.

He asked me about my name -- He wanted to know what my name was.

to ask for -- to make a request ; to make a request for ; to ask a favour
to beg ---to ask in a serious and sometimes in a humble manner ; to implore [intensifies the sense]
The boy begged his fatther not to punish him.
The boy implored his father help him get out of that unpleasant situation.
