A scientist called Charles Honorton invented an experiement which test whether telepathy really works.
what does "whether "mean here ?
I think it means "if".
Hi Volcano
"Whether" is a subordinating conjunction that means "if"
"Whether....or " is a correlative conjunction:
e.g. She is trying to decide whether to go to a medical school or to go to a law school.
"Whether.....or" links the two infinitive phrases above : "to go to a medical school" and "to go to law school".
Another example :
I did not know whether to do it [or not].
or ,using "if"
I did not know if I should do it [or not]

but there is not any "or" in my sentence.
Hi Volcano
Whether means "if" in your sentence .
"A scientist called Charles Honorton invented an experiement which test whether telepathy really works".= A scientist called C.H. invented an experiment which verifies if telepathy really works.
I`ve just added another usage of" whether" which can help you in some other circumstances.
See you
