2nd conditonal or subjunctive is it the same?

It's a conditional phrase in the subjunctive mood, expressing an idea that the speaker/writer believes to be improbable or untrue. For example:

"I have no intention of climbing Mt. Everest, but if I WERE to climb it I should surely die."

If I were to climb it I will surely die
If I were to climb it I would surely die
If I were to have climbed it I would have died.

The last two are correct, but the first is not. The subjunctive mood requires a conditional verb (one conjugated with 'would' or 'should').
