Use of "Around"

Accepted usage in the company I work for is to substitute the word "around" for "about", as in "Let's have a meeting around our quarterly results". The company is known for making up words ("planful" is my current favorite, as in "we must be more planful") but the use of "around" is so widespread that I wonder if this has a regional or industry derivation. Any comments?

It sounds quite metaphorical to me: the subject of the meeting is on the table, metaphorically or literally, and the people at the meeting sit "around" it.

(On the other hand, it could also suggest that everyone was circling the subject of the meeting warily, as if it might bite.)
